Hello Gymnastics Club members! Welcome to the first official monthly Club newsletter, a part of the Executive Board's new initiative to improve the dissemination and transparency of information between the Club's leadership and the general membership. You'll see that this newsletter has 4 sections: Upcoming Events, Financials, Competition, and Socials. The Upcoming Events section will look forward to important dates and announcements for the upcoming month (in this case, March 2019). The Financials section will describe the current financial state of the Club, including our projected budget, income, and expenses. The Competition section will reflect on any meets that our competitive members have attended the past month, in addition to any notable individual or team awards received. The Socials section will reflect on any fun social events we may have hosted. We're going to try and post on the first Sunday of every month. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these newsletters, you can email gymclub@umn.edu.

Financials
The UMN Gymnastics Club recently submitted our application and completed a presentation for the Student Services Fee (SSF) Committee for operations funding for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Club requests funding for our practice facilities (in the form of an 'equipment depreciation fee') and for liability insurance each year to make membership dues more affordable for all members. Here are some key slides from our presentation:
As you can see, we receive income from a variety of sources, mostly from individual contributions (in the form of membership dues), fundraising efforts, and from the SSF Committee. We also spend our income on a variety of things, but mostly on expenses related to our competitive team, facility fees, and insurance. Our goal for the future is to figure out how we can redistribute our income so that non-competitive member contributions do not directly support the competitive team, although the financing provided by the SSF Committee plays a significant role in keeping costs down for all members.
Another initiative that the Executive Board is looking into is whether we can offer coaches during our 2019-2020 academic year practices while keeping membership costs affordable. Presently, if we were to offer coaches for one practice per gym per week (two total practices per week), we would need to come up with an additional $5,000 for coaching expense. This could mean raising membership dues or requiring additional fundraising. Competition
The Gymnastics Club traveled to Champaign, IL for the Illini Invite on March 16th, 2019, hosted by the Flippin' Illini Gymnastics Club. We earned quite the hardware at this meet, taking FIRST PLACE in the team routine (#threepeatchampions), second place in the women's team, and third place in the men's team. Congratulations to our individual competitors that earned awards as well, including John Retzlaff, Abby Diekmann, and Chris Babbert. Here's some team pictures from the meet:
... and here is our winning team dance!
Looking forwards, our men's competitive team will be attending the Midwest Open this Saturday, March 3rd, and our entire competitive team will be attending the Midwest Regionals, hosted by the University of Wisconsin Madison Gymnastics Club, on March 9th, 2019. Make sure to stay updated with our team on our social media! #GoGophers #SkiUMah
